Annual General Meeting

This year’s Annual General Meeting will take place on Thursday 23 March in St Mary’s Church Hall. We will be serving drinks from 7 pm, and at 7.30 pm our two local Councillors - Sir Elgar Jenkins and John Bailey – will be speaking about their roles on the Council and the issues that they have been addressing over the last year.
They have agreed to answer questions from the audience and we very much hope that you will come along to raise the issues that concern you and hear what your local Council representatives have to say.

Mobile Phone Masts

The Council has given Planning Permission for Vodafone to erect a mobile phone mast [in the form of a flagpole] on the tower of St Mary`s Church. There has been considerable local opposition, which shows no sign of diminishing, and the Church Authorities have yet to announce a final decision on
whether they will be going ahead or not. We objected to the application for Planning Permission, and have made it clear to the Church that a large majority of our members living close to the Church is asking them not to do so.
The Council has rejected a Planning Application for O2 to erect a mobile phone mast on land adjacent to the Claverton Down Community Hall. The rejection was based on the adverse visual impact a mast in such a location would have. We objected also to this application. O2 has decided to appeal against the Council’s decision, and the matter will be considered by a Planning Inspector in a few weeks time.

Myrtlemee

A recent very welcome addition to the row of shops at George’s Place on Bathwick Hill is Myrtlemee, a truly inspirational flower shop owned by Emma Rees-Oliviere. A trained nurse, she worked at the Mineral Hospital in Bath for nearly 20 years before deciding to take up professionally her lifelong passion in flower arranging with a particular interest in growing and drying flowers. She enrolled on a floristry course and, with the encouragement of her husband Jon, who brought vast retail experience, the shop was opened.

Her style is contemporary and simple, using the choicest seasonal blooms, keeping them at their optimum temperature in a refrigerator she has installed. Fillers are minimal using foliage, twigs and other interesting materials, and where appropriate making use of silk flowers. Her arrangements are displayed in a stunning variety of vases, but she is also delighted to fill customers own containers.
Individual service and quality is of paramount importance and every purchase, however small, is beautifully wrapped and presented. Commissions can be taken for weddings and corporate events and deliveries are free in the wider Bath area.

Cornwall Lodge

Cornwall Lodge, No 5 Bathwick Hill, is assumed to have been designed by John Pinch and built in 1825, along with most of its neighbours. The front porch and adjacent extension are later alterations and the attic roof was raised in 1897. It is also expected that originally it would have been screened from the road by a high front wall, as is the case with most of the Regency Villas on the Hill, but this wall was partly replaced by iron railings which, in their turn were carted off during the second world war. The original glazing bars had also disappeared throughout the house , victim presumably of the Victorian fashion for large panes of unobstructed plate glass. The present owners have repaired the front wall and restored both railings and glazing bars, continuing a process which has been gradually pursued by many other householders on the hill.
