Demolition of a house in St Marys Close

It appears that the Council have just given permission to demolish a big 4-bedroom house in St Marys Close. The house is situated at the top of St Marys Close, on the corner with St Anne's Way. The planning application (actually there were two applications for the same thing!) was to demolish the existing house and build a bungalow in the grounds. I have a number of issues with this:

1. Why give agreement to pull down a perfectly adequate home which clearly depicts the style of properties built in the 1950's. I know this house is not from the Georgian times, but surely the 1950's still contributes towards Bath's heritage?

2. Once the property is demolished what stops the owners from re-applying to change their application to build more properties in the ground?

I would be interested to hear other residents comments on this matter. I know that a couple of us objected to the application (I'm not sure about anyone else) and if residents didn't object what benefits they saw in demolishing a lovely family home.
